What to Expect When Increasing Lexapro Dosage: Forum Insights and Expert Advice

When considering an increase in Lexapro dosage, online forums often become a treasure trove of shared experiences. Users post their personal journeys, providing invaluable insights into the potential effects and side effects that might arise. Understanding these discussions can play a crucial role in managing expectations and preparing for any changes.

These forums are filled with real-world advice and support, offering a perspective that complements the clinical information provided by healthcare professionals. Let’s dive into what these shared stories can tell us about increasing Lexapro dosages.

Personal Experiences

I just recently went up to 15mg from 10mg about 2 1/2 weeks ago. So far it’s been really bad for me. I’ve had a lot of intrusive thoughts, panic, and out of body feeling.

I’m thinking I might just need to go to 20mg at this point or try something else.

I started taking 10mg a few months ago and honestly I thought it was just not doing anything, just making me feel numb. I recently increased to 15mg and it’s been a bit better, but I still feel like it’s not enough.

I’ve been on 5mg Lexapro since February. The best way I can describe my experience has been that the Lexapro “takes the edge off” but I don’t feel like I’m seeing many of the positive side effects that many others post about.

I’m still lethargic and don’t really feel any more capable of doing the things I used to do, I just experience less of the physical side effects of anxiety (difficulty breathing, racing heart, etc.).

I started 5 mg Lexapro on 1/1/24. The first few weeks were GREAT! I felt less anxious and depressed and like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

I was able to get things done without thinking too much about it or being indecisive. I felt very positive and optimistic. Over time though, I’ve started to feel the depression and overall “ugghh” coming back.

Also, my alcohol and marijuana cravings skyrocketed. I started drinking way more and doing things that I know I shouldn’t, like hiding empty bottles from my fiancée and occasionally driving buzzed. I even started drinking beer, which is very off for me.

I’ve seriously had more beers over the last few weeks than I’ve had combined over the last 16 years. I think that maybe my body is signaling that it wants/needs a higher dose of serotonin and because I like to drink/smoke/party, I’m craving it more.

I started 10mg Lexapro in July and it was working phenomenally at first. About 3 weeks ago, my doctor increased me from 10mg to 15mg and last week which was the beginning of week 3 of my increase I was pretty down and had bad anxiety, loss of appetite (still do) but am able to make it through a regular day (barely).

Is this normal for where I’m at on the increase?

Common Side Effects

Users on forums often mention experiencing headaches, nausea, drowsiness, and difficulty sleeping when they increase their Lexapro dosage. Some also report dizziness, dry mouth, and sweating as physical side effects.

On the emotional side, users frequently discuss mood swings, increased anxiety, and feelings of agitation. There are also mentions of irritability and emotional instability during the adjustment period.

Dosage Adjustments

Users on forums share various experiences and strategies when it comes to increasing Lexapro dosage. One common insight is that increasing the dosage can lead to both positive and negative effects. For instance, some users report that increasing from 10mg to 20mg helped reduce anxiety and panic attacks, while others experienced side effects like increased anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and fatigue.

To manage side effects, users suggest several strategies:

  • Timing Adjustments: Some users found that taking Lexapro at different times of the day, such as in the afternoon instead of the morning, helped reduce side effects like lethargy and drowsiness.

  • Hydration and Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating small, frequent meals can help mitigate nausea, a common side effect.

  • Exercise and Relaxation Techniques: Engaging in regular exercise, yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can help manage anxiety and improve overall well-being.

  • Consulting Healthcare Providers: Users emphasize the importance of discussing any side effects or dosage changes with their doctors to ensure the best course of action.

Finding the right dosage often involves a trial-and-error process.

Users recommend giving the new dosage at least 4-6 weeks to see its full effects, as it can take time for the body to adjust. Keeping a journal to track symptoms and side effects can also help in determining the optimal dosage.

Overall, the key takeaway from these forums is that patience and open communication with healthcare providers are crucial in managing side effects and finding the right dosage.

Medical Advice vs. Forum Advice

Forums often contain anecdotal experiences and personal opinions about increasing Lexapro dosage, which can vary widely and may not be accurate or applicable to everyone. Users might share their own side effects, timelines for feeling better, and dosage adjustments, but these accounts are not tailored to individual medical histories or conditions.

In contrast, professional medical advice is based on clinical research, medical guidelines, and a thorough understanding of a patient’s health history. Healthcare providers consider factors like medical history, current medications, and individual responses to treatment before making any changes to medication dosages.

They also monitor patients closely for side effects and adjust treatment plans as necessary.

It’s crucial to consult healthcare providers before making any changes to medication dosages. They can provide personalized guidance and ensure that any adjustments are safe and effective. Self-medicating or relying solely on forum advice can lead to adverse effects and complications.

Always seek professional medical advice for any health-related decisions.
